There’s no intelligence in the screenplay, no copious amounts of blood letting, the characters do dumb things and in truth it unfolds as a standard girl in peril movie. A scene toward the middle of the film, however, hints that there is something more sinister going on at Ryan's house. This was a fitting lesson, as, by the end of the movie, Elissa learns that Ryan, himself, has more than a few secrets of his own. At the time of writing, it was in the top ten most popular movies on Netflix.

The brain damage from the accident made her extremely aggressive, leading to their parents' murder. Poorly conceived, clumsily executed, and almost completely bereft of scares, House at the End of the Street strands its talented star in a film as bland as its title. Although filming had been completed in 2010, the film was not released until 2012 by Relativity Media. Despite a negative response from critics, the film was a moderate commercial success. The cast of the film includes Gabby D. Barbosa, Jeremy Behie, Tristan Koclanis, Jay Alfonso Lopez Jr., and Mary Kate McCormick, among others. The Thompson residence in the 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street is located in Hollywood at 1428 Genessee Avenue.

Where to Watch

Early on in the movie, we learn part of Ryan's secret. Elissa and Sarah move out and Ryan is placed in a psychiatric ward. He begins to hear the voices of his deceased parents calling him Carrie-Anne.

This is likely due to the film's shocking and twist-filled ending, which we're going to break down in detail. The movie centers on Elissa (Lawrence) and her mother, Sarah (Elisabeth Shue), who move down the street from a house that was the site of a horrific double homicide. When Elissa becomes close with reclusive Ryan (Max Thieriot), who lives in the titular house at the end of the street, she discovers more than she wants to know about what really happened there.

This would seem to be the end of the sibling psychodrama, but the film still has a few twists in store for the viewers. The extended edition increased the length of certain scenes in the final cut by a few seconds and the amount of violence, blood, and gore was increased by a small amount. A tie-in novelization of the movie was released on August 12, 2012, to accompany the movie by Little, Brown and Company. The film was originally scheduled to be released in February 2012,[6] but was moved to a September 2012 release.

The Happy Days house was the home of the fictional Cunningham family in the sitcom filmed from 1974 to 1984. You won't find the porch swing or Fonzie's motorcycle parked on the front lawn, but, otherwise, the Happy Days house looks much the same as it did. You may find a private security guard driving around the neighborhood, though. The Happy Days house is at 565 North Cahuenga Boulevard.

Used in both the original 1991 and the 1995 sequel of the film Father of the Bride, starring Steve Martin, the Father of the Bride house still looks like it did in the films. While Martin's character claims he lives in San Marino, the Father of the Bride house is actually located in Pasadena at 843 S. According to iamnostalker.com, the filmmakers had to fix up the Father of the Bride house before they started shooting. The fence is also new since The Brady Bunch was filmed, added when the owner grew frustrated with rude people walking up and peering into her living room. The house made its debut in the second episode of The Brady Bunch and appeared in almost every one of the 115 episodes that ensued. The Brady Bunch house is located at Dilling Street in North Hollywood.

20 Craftsman-Style Homes with Timeless Charm

arts and crafts style house

While most notably founded in Great Britain, as seen above, with these North London houses, Arts and Crafts homes are also popular across the East Coast in the United States. The design style is typically found in country towns either in the mountains or away from the harsher elements of the seaside. The studio renovated the Grade-II listed building – the only factory designed by the architect – into a "premium workspace" for property developer Dorrington. It will be occupied by wallpaper company Sanderson Design Group, which originally commissioned the building as an extension to its main factory more than a century ago.

Europe's best new building

It was one of many houses that illustrated the influence of Japanese design on their work, especially the use of wooden construction. A bevy of Bay Area designers put their own twist on shingled wood construction, especially in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley. Among them was Bernard Maybeck, whose shingled houses often showed Gothic references. Julia Morgan, famous as the designer of William Randolph Hearst’s San Simeon, carried out many other Arts & Crafts commissions in California.

Once upon a not-too-distant Art Basel Miami Beach, before the pandemic upended social gatherings, a creative crowd packed into the Shorecrest home of art dealer Nina Johnson and singer-songwriter Daniel Milewski. A short drive away, a show of Allen’s works on paper at Johnson’s namesake gallery offered a visual counterpoint to the tunes. Bungalows have wide-pitched roofs with dormers, allowing for ample attic space. This historic home style also features built-in options like bookcases and window seats to make the most use of available space. There is also a revitalized interest in Arts and Craft design ideas in interior design and architecture as evidenced by the cottagecore movement.

Site and situation of Arts and Crafts homes

“The elaborate detail of exterior rafter ends and brackets also drive up the costs of a true Craftsman home,” Yeley adds. It heralded a new approach in which architecture, furniture and adornments were all intended to sit in harmony. But these homes also celebrated the beauty of the outdoors in the American prairies. Architects designed Arts and Crafts homes to react to the overdecoration of Victorian homes, so this home style has a simpler and more rustic look.

Popular Types of American Arts and Crafts Houses

Brick along the base of the porch and an overhead lantern add interest to the facade. Color-coordinated containers beckon visitors onto the porch of this Arts and Crafts home. Spring-green ceramic spheres match the containers to provide a unifying effect. The traditional Craftsman front door showcases multi-pane windows and an earthy stain that offers a warm welcome from the street. Call it a meeting of the minds—eccentric, design-obsessed, and slightly demented minds. The story begins at a Los Angeles gym, where entrepreneur Yoram Heller and architect Andre Herrero struck up what can only be described as a bromance.

Handmade ceramics—including tiles for both indoor and outdoor use—became a thriving Arts & Crafts industry throughout the country. Rookwood, Pewabic, Batchelder, Van Briggle, and a host of other potteries flourished. Potteries and other Arts & Crafts industries, in fact, provided the first entry for large numbers of women into the world of design. In Kansas City, Missouri, Mineral Hall (built in 1913 by Louis Curtiss), with its ornamented, arched entrance, is probably the best American example of Art Nouveau architectural features, rarely seen in this country. Stickley’s enthusiasm for the bungalow helped the style spread rapidly during the first quarter of the century—so much so that the words “Craftsman” and “bungalow” are now inextricably linked in the old-house lexicon.

Prominent eastern architects included William L. Price, Aymar Embury, Wilson Eyre, and Joy Wheeler Dow. The house is located on a grassy knoll overlooking Pasadena's Arroyo Seco, a broad, seasonally dry river bed. Because of the Gambles’ attraction to the environment, the Greenes designed the house to complement the rustic setting. The house's design reflected the Gambles' love of nature as flowers and trees were brought to the interior—creating pictures in wood, metal, art glass, and semi-precious stone. It's easy to make too much of the differences, but the truth is that Arts and Crafts interior design is a continuum, with huge amounts of variation from home to home, country to country, and architect to architect. Still, they can have a substantially similar feel inside, created by the built-in shelving and furniture; natural and nature-inspired materials, colors, patterns and design elements; and largely undecorated (and usually dark) wood.

Is Craftsman style timeless?

The Mission style combines elements of an Arts and Crafts home with historic Spanish architecture. The exterior of these homes feature white stucco, hand-painted tiles, quatrefoil windows, arched openings, exposed wood beams, and painted ironwork. The interior features of Arts and Crafts style houses reflect this design style’s simple and practical nature.

Architecture studio dMFK Architects has restored and renovated the Voysey House office in Chiswick, London, which was originally designed as a wallpaper factory by architect CFA Voysey. In Southern California, the Pasadena-based firm Greene and Greene was the most renowned practitioner of the original American Craftsman Style. Their projects for Ultimate bungalows include the Gamble House and Robert R. Blacker House in Pasadena, and the Thorsen House in Berkeley, California—with numerous others in California. Other examples in the Los Angeles region include the Arts and Crafts Lummis House by Theodore Eisen and Sumner P. Hunt, along the Arroyo Seco in Highland Park, California and the Journey House, located in Pasadena. This selection of unique Craftsman houses showcases rich character and timeless curb appeal.

A bungalow is a small house that, traditionally, is only one story high, though today it’s common to find ones whose attic space has been converted into a second-story bedroom. Bungalows are raised from the sidewalk with a short flight of steps and feature small verandas, overhanging eaves, and dormer windows. Inside, bungalows use their small space efficiently, with tight, compact closets, built-in cabinets, and shelving. A furniture maker named Gustav Stickley popularized this style in the US through his publications in The Craftsman magazine.

Are Craftsman-style homes popular?

Some of the key characteristics of this style of home can be found just by looking to the exterior. Rooftops are either sloping down from a centerpoint of the house, or are angled halfway down at an obtuse angle to help guide the runoff of rain and melting snow away from the home since these houses are often found in colder climates. Below, we investigate Arts and Crafts house style – this prettiest of house styles – and how to make the most of it. Throughout, dMFK Architects aimed to draw attention to the building's original structure including its iron columns and shallow, barrow-vaulted concrete ceilings enclosed in corrugated iron shuttering.

Origins of the Arts and Crafts Architecture Style

Designed by the AD100 firm Charlap Hyman & Herrero, that space, a reprieve from the city’s white-box galleries and slick hotels, has been the site of many gatherings. But for Johnson, there’s something particularly special about entertaining at home. Objects are enhanced by the lives lived around them.” In the case of her living room, those objects include works by Judy Chicago, Awol Erizku, Seth Cameron, and others from her growing roster of talent.

Craftsman Home Details

Others followed in Morris’s footsteps, including the architect CFA Voysey, whose patterns featured bold repeats and col- ours. Some of his designs are available through House of Hackney, Lewis & Wood and US company Trustworth Studios. Designer Ben Pentreath, who decorated an Arts and Crafts house in Hampstead featured in the May 2018 issue of House & Garden, is an advocate of its contemporary appeal.

Craftsman Architecture

This home style started to debut on the British side in the late 19th century, more specifically 1860s. As a response to the withering quality of homes in the mid 19th century, designers began working to construct houses that had a more ornate look with angled rooftops, columns, porches, and beautified exteriors. An Arts and Crafts-style home is a small-to-medium sized, single family home that usually is a square shape with two stories. The wood joinery and front porch are the most apparent traits of a Craftsman style home, but the distinct design of an Arts and Crafts house has been adapted to suit homeowners needs since their earliest development in the late 19th century. Inside, common fixtures include built-in shelving, fireplaces, and segmented rooms as opposed to an open floor plan.

The Gamble House, also known as the David B. Gamble House, is an iconic American Craftsman home in Pasadena, California, designed by the architectural firm Greene and Greene. Constructed in 1908–1909 as a home for David B. Gamble, son of the Procter & Gamble founder James Gamble, it is today a National Historic Landmark, a California Historical Landmark, and open to the public for tours and events. There are many types of architecture within the Arts and Crafts style, including Craftsman and Bungalows.

Interior Features of an Arts and Crafts House

arts and crafts style house

In the early 1900s, developer Herberg J. Hapgood built several Craftsman-style homes, many from stucco, that comprise the lakeside borough of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. Residents were called "Lakers." The homes followed signature styles, including bungalows and chalets. Architect David Owen Dryden designed and built many Craftsman California bungalows in the North Park district, now a proposed Dryden Historic District. The 1905 Marston House of George Marston in Balboa Park was designed by local architects Irving Gill and William Hebbard. The term Arts & Crafts refers to a broad social and artistic movement that took shape in Great Britain and Europe in the middle of the 19th century and then leapt the Atlantic to garner wild acclaim in the United States at the turn of the 20th century.

Consider siding options that at least appear to be hand-worked natural materials. Resist the urge to enclose your porch for a more cozy sunroom, or at least make the sunroom as well-integrated with the outdoors as you can, perhaps by giving it a transitional porch or deck of its own. House & Garden says that the Arts and Crafts movement is just as relevant to the digital age as it was to the beginning of the industrial age. But tastes and materials have changed, of course, so the interpretation of such concepts as "honest materials" and "refined simplicity" will have evolved as well.

Popular Types of American Arts and Crafts Houses

He educated his readers in the Arts and Crafts style and inspired the building of simple-style houses known as bungalows or craftsman homes. This movement also inspired mission-style furniture, popular on America’s east coast in the late 1890s. You may have noticed that the Arts and Crafts movement is having a bit of a moment, with some of today’s naturalistic wallpapers and fabrics, rustic furniture and pared-back interiors seeming to have their roots in this style.

This, of course, inspired countless bungalows and Foursquares that still dot the streets of suburbs around the country. The Arts and Crafts Movement in American Craftsman style architecture was focused on the use of natural materials, attention to detail, aesthetics, and craftsmanship. Perhaps the first hint that you're looking at an Arts and Crafts house is the impression of the roofline. Arts and Crafts homes typically feature low and expansive roofs, according to Degnan Design-Build-Remodel. Of course, as with everything else about the larger Arts and Crafts movement (especially its American development), exceptions are the rule.

Grochowski notes that the premium for this type of artistry is “roughly 20 to 30% more than a typical mass-produced home of another style.” This is in part because the master craftspeople are rare. By the 20th century, the bungalow-style models were dotting Southern California and the midwest—beckoning buyers with craftsmanship and curb appeal. Craftsman style is synonymous with “cozy, homey and unpretentious,” says Susan Yeley, creative director and owner of Susan Yeley Homes in Bloomington, Indiana. " for the people and by the people, and a source of pleasure to the maker and the user." Workers could produce beautiful objects that would enhance the lives of ordinary people, and at the same time provide decent employment for the craftsman.

In April 2022, it was announced[32] that RH would purchase and renovate the Linden House, the home of the late Christel DeHaan,[33] in Indianapolis, Indiana into a store showroom and restaurant. In November 2023, grand opening plans to the public were announced[1] for November 17, 2023. The estate includes a 41,762-square-foot mansion, a private lake, terraces, and formal gardens. There are seven bedrooms and 10 full bathrooms, plus seven half-bathrooms in the house built in 2007. I had the brussel sprouts and the RH bistro burger with truffle fries, which was very good. In 2015, RH opened its first hospitality concept, the Three Arts Café in Chicago.

39 Beautiful Black Room Ideas

black room design

As transient spaces, small shower rooms can be great places to be bold with décor. For his shower room, Lee Thornley, founder of tile company Bert & May chose walls and floors in black tiles to make a statement. The combination of hexagonal and square bathroom tiles brings subtle decorative interest while the brass fixtures make a beautiful contrast. Picture a space where the darkness of the walls is enhanced by meticulously placed trimmings, carefully chosen to add texture and depth to the room. The interplay of light and shadow dances upon the surfaces, creating a symphony of contrasting hues that ignites a sense of intrigue. With abundant natural light, these windows offer the benefits of exceptional lighting and the ability to see layers in even the darkest corners of the room.

Black Natural Living Room

Black accent walls behind the headboard are a popular way to incorporate the style without painting the whole room. "Surprisingly, there are many shades of black," says interior designer Courtney Scott of V. James & Co Interiors. Start off with an accent wall and once you are used to the color, you can start creeping it around the rest of the room.

Team black kitchen units with light, textured worksurfaces

Give your bedroom an eclectic feel by decorating with whimsical illustrations, unique nightstands and patterned armchairs. Make your black nightstand pop by adding on unique knobs. Take inspiration from this fun plant-themed nightstand featuring flower knobs and cactus decorations. White is the most popular pair for the color black, but you can try yellow as well. This living room offers a stylish wall design along with brown leather seats set on the large tiles flooring.

Stylish Black Bedroom Ideas and Photos

Add texture to the space above your bed by decorating with abstract and three-dimensional pieces that match your color scheme. Pair a gorgeous black and white bedspread with bright blue and orange pillows for the perfect unified look. Black-themed kitchen featuring a black island with a gray granite countertop.

If a moody powder room suits your fancy, paint the walls, vanity cabinet, mirror frame and trim black. Swap out the faucets and hardware for matte black fixtures. Add definition with white tile floors and subway shower surround.

Give your black bedroom a Bohemian feel by decorating with patterned pillows and blankets. Place gold-accented decor against a black wall for the perfect pop of color in your black bedroom. Enhance the brightness in a room with black walls by using a white bedspread and bright red accents throughout the room. Add your own twist to a classic black and white color scheme by using fun modern pieces of decor, like this eclectic hanging chandelier. Black-themed kitchen featuring a stylish black island with wooden top set on the herringbone-style hardwood flooring.

Black Bedroom

Benefit from the timeless beauty and durability of a wood floor that brings a sense of organic charm to the room. Picture a sleek wood headboard as the focal point, exuding a blend of contemporary style and rustic allure. Embrace the allure of pendant lamps, track lights, and wrap lights to transform your space into a visual masterpiece. Studio Gild opted for a surplus of black in this Highland Park bedroom. A subtly patterned black wallpaper paired with black millwork accentuates a colorful curation of collectibles. For a downtown bedroom, the design firm de la Torre design studio used luxe fur bedding in a fetching tan tone to complement a black statement wall.

Inspiring Interior Paint Colors & Ideas

For a glam touch, incorporate rose gold, brass, chrome and silver accents. Try a geometric pendant light, bar cart, animal bust or throw pillow with shiny metallic embellishments. The absence of color in a black room puts all the focus on texture. Use a layered mix of textiles, from faux fur to nubby linens. Incorporate various sheens – think glossy, metallic, matte.

To create a cozy and comfortable ambiance in a black bedroom, focus on textures and layers. Consider using different materials like velvet, faux fur, or chunky knit blankets to add warmth and tactile appeal. Additionally, strategically placed soft lighting, such as bedside lamps or string lights, can create a soothing atmosphere. Remember, a well-balanced mix of textures and lighting can make a black bedroom feel cozy and inviting.

The right exterior house colors can make or break a first impression. “Paint sets the tone for what you want your home to express,” Katie Burnet, an interior designer with Rumor Designs in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, says. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the decision—especially considering what a big, expensive, and highly visible undertaking painting your house can be—you're definitely not alone. That’s why we’ve put together an expert guide to help you choose an exterior color palette you love. Add brightness to your black bedroom with a cheery yellow lamp. Display black and white photos of famous stars to add vintage glam to your bedroom.

Use sparkling silver accents to make your black bedroom pop. Decorate with silver artwork and curtains and include a silver bedspread. If you just have a small amount of space between your bed and wall, decorate with a tiny side table. Use colorful decorations to make the small piece of furniture pop. Wrap a piece of brass fabric around the base of a white nightstand for the perfect contrast. Stage a beautiful vintage scene in your black bedroom by decorating a distressed black dresser with an antique piece of art.

This black bathroom has the genius design of having a couple of walls be completely covered with mirrors. This mirror reflects the other two black walls and was able to brighten up the bathroom by reflecting the white lights of the cathedral white ceiling. A black-themed dining room featuring an oval dining table paired with black chairs, set on a black area rug covering the hardwood flooring. Modern primary bedroom featuring black wall and floors, along with a black bed frame. This elegant living room has black and white patterns dominating the wallpaper and the area rug underneath the white modern coffee table. The two comfortable sofas follow this theme with white cushions and black wooden legs that contrast the white flooring.

black room design

Lacquered walls bring polish to the library of cosmetics executive Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer’s Long Island home. The dark palette is enlivened with a Chip Hooper photograph, a floor lamp by Serge Mouille, and a graphic patterned carpet by AM Collections. In this Long Island house designed by ELLE DECOR A-Lister Joe Nahem and Blaze Makoid, a black ceiling and neutral furnishings gives the sensation of lounging beneath a night sky. This Harlem bachelor pad had a small foot print, but design firm Re-a.d used color where it counted, in this case an inky shade all over the upper and lower kitchen cabinets.

Pepper in shots of color with art, plants, flowers and books. Layer patterned pillows and throws over solid black furniture. Use textiles in various prints and patterns like subtle stripes, intricate damask and graphic motifs. Play with different pile heights – flat weave cottons, nubby wools, plush chenille.

The best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for every type of traveler

norwegian cruise review

Norwegian adds an automatic service charge of $20 to $25 per person, per day, to final bills, depending on your cabin category. Depending on the service you receive, you can adjust the amount up or down at the guest services desk before disembarking. In addition, a 20% gratuity is added to the bill at bars, extra-charge specialty restaurants and ship spas. Norwegian is also a mass-market brand, not a luxury cruise operator. Still, as we'll explain below, it offers a wide range of accommodations, some of which fall squarely in the luxury segment.

Viking Cruises

Unlike other cruise ships, Norwegian Getaway Bermuda sailings more often than not combine days on the pink-sand island with Puerto Rico, the US and British Virgin Islands, St Maarten and Dominican Republic, among other destinations. Norwegian had several available itineraries in our apples-to-apples comparison, looking for a trip in March within the Caribbean and booking about a year in advance. Prices were about average, starting at $599 per person for a 5-day sailing out of Miami to Great Stirrup Cay (NCL's private island) and Cozumel, and going up to $1,319 for a 7-day sailing from Puerto Rico to Barbados, Antigua, and St. Lucia. Interestingly, a 12-day cruise out of Punta Cana and visiting Barbados, Curacao and Aruba was less expensive, with a starting fare of $1,079 per person. At the time of our review, NCL had a promotion in place offering free airfare for the second guest on the booking, which could be a pretty significant savings depending on your departure port. Similarly, we didn’t have much time onboard Norwegian Sun to experience the entertainment.

Norwegian Sun had a lot of similarities to what I remember from Pride of America onboard the ship. As we made our way onboard, we were greeted by very friendly crew members who offered us cooling towels. It was hot in Malaga on this day and we were wearing our large backpacks, so the cooling towel was just what we needed. Within 10 minutes, we were walking up the gangway to Norwegian Sun. We were immediately impressed with the exterior appearance of the cruise ship, as the paint looked fresh and the ship was in very good condition. My best friend (and fellow CruiseBlog writer) Hayley joined me for this two night sailing onboard Norwegian Sun.

How much does it cost to go on Norwegian Breakaway?

We listened to one live musician on the pool deck the first day and then attended one of the headliner shows, Cosmopolitan, on the second night. Because we wanted to enjoy our day in Cadiz, we spent our only full day ashore in the city. We also discovered an outdoor buffet that was located not too far from the Garden Cafe that featured classic pool deck food like hamburgers and hot dogs; however, we didn’t have enough time to try this one out. While searching for spring break cruises, I stumbled upon a very cheap, two night sailing onboard Norwegian Sun.

The ship is cashless, so you'll use your room keycard like a charge card to make purchases, which are then charged to your onboard account.

Is Norwegian Getaway a good ship to cruise on?

However, overlaid across most vessels are high-end suites and services that are at a luxury level, and the line draws a good number of luxury-seeking travelers. The line's nine newest ships are big, bustling floating megaresorts that can carry upwards of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers at double occupancy (and even more with every berth filled). At around 143,000 to nearly 170,000 tons, all eight currently rank among the 50 biggest cruise ships in the world (although their rankings will shift downward as more big ships debut). Instead of a few big main restaurants with fixed seating times, Norwegian ships offer a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times — just make a reservation. For this 12-night cruise, the Free at Sea package included three meals at specialty dining venues. Additional meals were available as an upgrade — $99 for two more, $139 for three more, and $30 more for each additional meal you wanted after that.

All but one Norwegian ship (Pride of America) has a casino, and on the line's bigger vessels, they are huge operations. The casino on Norwegian Encore has more than 300 slot machines and 26 table games (including blackjack, roulette, poker and craps), plus its own bar. Like Royal Caribbean ships, Norwegian vessels have an inordinate amount of teen- and tween-friendly attractions — everything from some of the largest waterslides at sea to the only go-kart tracks on the ocean.

The entryway to each of these ships, for instance, deposits you at the three-story-high Penrose Atrium, which may be the most beautiful atrium of any big ship at sea. It has a curvy, sculptural feel as if the entire space were an art piece. We've seen these private The Haven suite areas on Norwegian ships before but never on this scale.

Known for being a family-friendly cruise line, there are younger families mixed with multigenerational travelers as well as some honeymooners and younger couples. I enjoyed too much good food in the free and specialty restaurants and did not spend nearly enough time in the gym or spa. My shore excursion ticket was in my room when I first got into my cabin, and it told me when to meet in the theater. At the specified time, someone called the number of the tour, and I went to the front of the theater to get a sticker with a group number on it and got off the ship.

There's an abridged version of Q Texas Smokehouse, serving pulled pork sandwiches a la Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss. There's also a food truck that serves small plates similar to what you can order at Bayamo on Norwegian Escape. Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore are virtually carbon copies of each other. They’re both part of Norwegian’s Breakaway Plus class, offer very similar itineraries in Alaska and the Caribbean, and were built one year apart (2018 and 2019, respectively). However, Bliss has a smaller racetrack and a smaller laser tag area, which are two of the biggest hits on Encore.

27 vaccinated people test positive for Covid on a Carnival cruise ship

When the cruise departed on Saturday from Nassau in the Bahamas, the guests were required to show proof of a negative PCR test. Unvaccinated minors were also required to take another test at check-in. Everyone had tested negative prior to boarding, according to a spokesperson for the company. Royal Caribbean Cruises shares fell about 4% on Friday after six passengers on board its Adventure of the Seas ship tested positive for Covid-19. There are 2,895 guests and 1,441 crew on the ship that sailed from Galveston, Texas, the tourism board said. That includes sailings on eight ships operated by four cruise lines.

The four of those guests were fully vaccinated and not traveling together. The Motley Fool’s Rich Smith recently highlighted the fact that cruising isn’t enjoyable these days. You don’t have to tell the passengers of the Carnival Vista that. As my InvestorPlace colleague, Larry Ramer, recently wrote, cruise lines may again face no-sail bans due to the surge in cases from the Delta variant. However, it shows what risks are involved in taking a cruise at this point, vaccinated or not.

Cruises are 'a recipe for transmission'

The tests came back as part of routine, end-of-cruise testing, which was offered as a courtesy by the cruise line, since most passengers need to show proof of a negative test in order to return home. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading expert on infectious diseases, recently said that he thinks the country will have control over Covid and regain a sense of normalcy by spring 2022. But even then, travel and cruises will likely be high-risk activities.

A recent story appeared in Jim Walker’s Cruise Law News detailing the death of a 77-year-old woman who took a Carnival cruise with her family, leaving Galveston, Texas on July 31. During the pandemic, the port reduced its staff by 43% — from 268 positions to 153. That was done through a combination of 68 permanent layoffs, 17 unpaid furloughs, and not filling 30 positions that were left vacant because of retirement or employees taking jobs elsewhere. But that's still less than the port's pre-pandemic staffing level.

Then, he is projecting that they will operate at 75% of their double-occupancy capacity from January through September 2022. In all, 14 ships operated by five cruise lines will be based at Port Canaveral either year-round or part of the year. Some cruise lines in recent days have announced new measures designed to keep COVID-19 off their ships.

The new guidance applies to older adults, people with certain medical conditions and pregnant and recently pregnant people. Prior to Friday’s announcement, the agency recommended that only people who were not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 avoid cruise ships. For example, six passengers on a recent Royal Caribbean International Adventure of the Seas cruise sailing from Nassau, the Bahamas, tested positive for COVID-19. Carnival asks that its passengers wear masks in certain indoor areas. Also, beginning Aug. 14, all vaccinated passengers, in addition to unvaccinated passengers, needed to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to embarkation, as the cruise line modified its protocols "to adapt to the changing public health situation." If your heart is set on going on a cruise before then, you should get vaccinated when you're eligible, Malani says.

Carnival Stock Continues to Carry Weight of the ‘Unwanted’ Passenger

According to Cruise Law News, 26 crew and one passenger (Tackett) on the Carnival Vista tested positive for Covid-19. Further, something like 27 cruise ships have reported cases of Covid-19. The publication also has reported that a Carnival chief engineer died of Covid-19 after working for the company for more than 34 years with nary a mention from the company. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives cruise ships a color-coded safety status — green, yellow, orange and red — based on reports of cases of Covid or Covid-like illness. The agency also indicates when there are investigations into outbreaks on ships.

Port Canaveral Secretary/Treasurer Robyn Hattaway expressed some frustration during Wednesday's Canaveral Port Authority meeting about how long it was taking for the port to get its ARPA money. Even with the ARPA money, Port Canaveral expects to report losses of $39.48 million during the current budget year. "We can try to do cruises as safely as possible, but we are going to have breakthrough cases," says Ostrosky. You eat and drink indoors at buffet restaurants with large communal tables, attend shows in theaters and touch all kinds of surfaces, from railings to casino games. If an outbreak happens at sea, you're restricted to the boat, which can make the outbreak harder to contain and treat.

While I believe the cruise industry will return to normal at some point, now doesn’t appear to be that time. And even with safety measures in place, cruises come with residual risks that can't be ignored, like unavoidable close quarters and potential for breakthrough infections. Travel of any kind is currently a very high-risk activity, explains Dr. Luis Ostrosky, division chief for infectious diseases at UT Health, part of the University of Texas, Houston. "And we don't have the level of vaccination we need to assure that people are going to survive if they happen to get [Covid]."

He said the port will continue reduced spending levels for promotions, advertising, travel, sponsorships and consultants. Poole said, with cruising resuming, the port will have increases in various other expenses, including for service contracts, utilities and public safety. Additionally, there will be 630 half-day sailings of the Victory 1 gambling ship. The money will help cover its losses stemming from a 16½-month shutdown of the cruise industry locally because of COVID-19. Carnival said it also has a process in place to randomly test a large percentage of its crew on a rotating basis multiple days per week, even though all are vaccinated.

Then, look for cruises that require vaccination proof and only allow reduced capacity — the lower, the better. While on the cruise, pick activities and excursions that are lower-risk, she says, like always dining outdoors. And of course, board the ship with the understanding that no matter what happens, you're taking a risk. To make cruises genuinely safe, he says, companies would need to require mandatory two-week quarantines for each passenger and crew member, negative Covid tests 24 to 48 hours before boarding and another negative Covid test immediately after boarding.

Three passengers tested positive for COVID-19 at the end of the recent inaugural seven-night sailing from Port Canaveral of Carnival Cruise Line’s newest and largest ship, the Mardi Gras. Cruises are even particularly risky when compared to other types of travel, like driving or flying, because they present more opportunities for prolonged exposure. "Frankly, the risk on a two-hour flight where everyone is masked and airflow is good is [lower] than being on a cruise ship for five days straight," says Dr. Preeti Malani, chief health officer at the University of Michigan. Only one of the positive cases was a passenger; the remaining 26 were crew members. All 27 people were vaccinated and are experiencing mild or no symptoms, the country's tourism board said.

Passengers will be required to have a negative test before they board ships, said CEO Michael Bayley in a Facebook post. Twenty-seven people tested positive for Covid-19 aboard the Carnival Vista cruise ship, which docked in Belize on Wednesday, according to the Belize Tourism Board. The CDC recommends people who go on cruises wear a mask in shared spaces and get tested one to three days before their trip and three to five days after, regardless of vaccination status. Passengers who are not fully vaccinated should also self-quarantine for at least seven days after their cruise ends, according to the CDC's website. During the current budget year, there will be a total of 66 cruise ship sailings with passengers in a period stretching from July 31 through Sept. 29, according to Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer John Murray. Among them, there were cases involving 26 crew members and one passenger on the Carnival Vista on a recent cruise that sailed from Galveston, Texas.

You can check the CDC's website for a ship's Covid status before planning or boarding a cruise. A number of cruise lines have strengthened COVID-19 regulations on U.S. sailings as the delta variant continues to spread. Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line added mask requirements in select spaces and testing requirements for all passengers, regardless of vaccination status, earlier this month. The discovery was among a series of positive COVID-19 tests among passengers and crew of ships operated by Carnival and other cruise lines in recent weeks.

"The CDC’s conditional sail order and our own protocols anticipate the potential for COVID on board, and our procedures are designed to manage and mitigate any situation," Carnival said in a statement on that incident. "The health, safety and well-being of our guests, crew and the destinations we visit is our priority." Carnival discovered the cases when doing required COVID-19 tests near the end of its cruise.
